Macmillan's late nineteenth-century reprints of classic tales illustrated by fine artists came to be known as the Cranford Series, after Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford, illustrated by Hugh Thomson and published in 1891. The series ran from 1876 (Old Christmas) to 1907 (Silas Marner), and includes 24 crown octavo volumes, instantly recognizable by their distinctive forest-green shiny cloth publisher's bindings with rich gilt pictorial designs on upper covers and spines. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.
