Kinsey and his colleagues at the Institute for Sex Research at Indiana University based their study on personal interviews with some 6,000 women and 5,300 men, collected during a fifteen year period. The text describes the methodology, sampling, coding, interviewing, and statistical analyses. The data were analyzed to calculate frequency with which men and women engage in various forms of sexual activity, and Kinsey considered how such factors as age, social-economic status, and religious adherence influenced sexual behavior. The evidence suggested that women were less sexually active than men, but many of the study's other conclusions were immediately controversial, causing shock and outrage, both because they challenged conventional beliefs about sexuality and because they discussed subjects considered taboo. The Kinsey Reports together sold three-quarters of a million copies and were translated into thirteen languages, making them among the most successful and influential scientific works of the twentieth century.
