Foolscap 8vo (178 x 115mm): [6],335,[11]pp. Original lime-green pictorial cloth (also issued in wrappers), spine and upper cover stamped in black, scarlet, and gilt. Discrete oval book label with monogram of bibliophile and Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger, whose library was dispersed by Sotheby's in 2013. A superior example, virtually pristine (small rectangular offsetting to inner edges of pp. 176-77, where short receipt was laid in), tightly bound and crisp and clean throughout. Wise 2. Keating 6. Originally entitled Two Vagabonds: A Tale of the Islands and inspired by Conrad's experiences as mate of the steamer Vidar. In many ways, reminiscent of his first novel, Almayer’s Folly, and featuring Conrad's recurring character Tom Lingard, who also appears in Almayer's Folly and The Rescue (sometimes called the Lingard Trilogy), as well as sharing other characters with those novels.
