Crown 8vo (185 x 137mm): xii,102pp,[8]pp, including 24 full-page illustrations. Publisher's white buckram spine lettered in black, orange sides with titles and decoration of an elderly gent on a hobby-horse to upper cover in black, white, and lemon-yellow (no dust wrapper was issued). From this humble start, Chesterton went on to write several hundred more poems and some 80 books and 200 short stories, as well as about 4,000 essays (notably, articles for the Encyclopedia Britannica, including the entry on Charles Dickens and part of the entry on Humor in the 14th edition of 1929) and several plays. His best-known character is the priest-detective Father Brown, who appeared only in short stories. N. B.
