Knape's forward neatly sums up Eggleston's pioneering contribution: "His personal approach to the everyday and the banal, combined with his break from formal photographic conventions, resulted in the deceptively 'accidental' quality of his picture making. Eggleston introduced a new aesthetic, a new 'democratic' way of seeing through which the ordinary and banal became extraordinary and engrossing. Like Robert Frank in the Fifties, William Eggleston radically re-invented the photography of the real world." N. B.
