New York: Boni & Liveright, 1922. First Edition. Hardcover. Second Impression (and not, as the colophon states, "Second Edition," for which see Gallup), Number 369 (stamped in type 2-mm high) limited to just 1000 copies. With the incorrect 'mount in,' line 339, p. 41. Slim crown 8vo (192 x 124mm) 64pp. Publisher's stiff black cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt, all edges deckled; original salmon-pink dust jacket lettered in black. Near Fine, clean and complete, gilt lettering still bright, with minor bumping to spine ends; flawed by dark offsetting from paper laid in between back end papers and between pp. 38-39 and light chipping to top of half title and title pages. The jacket is Near Fine or better, without restoration, the front and back panels clean and complete—indeed Fine—but spine panel darkened with trivial rubbing to ends and sliver of loss mid-spine, not affecting any lettering. Overall, a highly collectible copy of likely the century's most important poetic work. Gallup A6b. Connolly (Modern Movement) 30b. HBS 65471. Hayward 332. Near Fine / Near Fine+. Item #BB0577

Eliot's 434-line poem, combining the legend of the Holy Grail and the Fisher King with vignettes of contemporary British society, first appeared in the United Kingdom in the October issue of The Criterion and in the United States in the November issue of The Dial. "It is the breviary of post-war disillusion, 'the hope only of empty men,' written in Switzerland after a near break-down . . . " (Connolly) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves.
