Written during South Africa's Sharpeville massacre of 1960, which demonstrated to many liberals in the author's camp the futility of nonviolent resistance and marked her own movement toward a political and literary radicalism. While Occasion for Loving, like its predecessors, The Lying Days (1953) and A World of Strangers (1958), relied on formal novelistic conventions, her next novels, including The Conservationist (1974), for which she won the Nobel Prize, begin a period of stylistic innovation.
