The series is set during the Napoleonic Wars, but this episode (largely self-contained) finds Aubrey and Maturin in the Pacific. The episode centers on the stowaway Clarissa Harvill (later Oakes), a young convict from the penal settlement at New South Wales. Clarissa spreads ill-will among the crew as a result of her liaisons with several of the ship's officers. N. B.
