Not technically one of the Cranford series, but one of Balston's derivatives: "the green cloth [and gilt decoration] corresponds exactly with the Cranford series." Macmillan's late nineteenth-century reprints of classic tales illustrated by fine artists came to be known as the Cranford Series, after Mrs. Gaskell's Cranford, illustrated by Hugh Thomson and published in 1891. The series ran from 1876 (Old Christmas) to 1907 (Silas Marner), and includes 24 crown octavo volumes, instantly recognizable by their distinctive forest-green shiny cloth publisher's bindings with rich gilt pictorial designs on upper covers and spines.
