[Lowell served five months in West Street jail, in New York, and federal prison at Danbury, Connecticut, after refusing to serve in the army when he was inducted in 1943.] Again there was a brouhaha, and again Lowell briefly became a public figure, admired by war protesters and reviled by war supporters.
