Published to accompany an exhibition at Fraenkel Gallery, in San Francisco, during November and December of 2001. This small but central body of Avedon's work, many of the images published here for the first time, was made in Paris for Harper's Bazaar during the 1950s, when postwar France was striving through fashion to reclaim its cultural eminence. The models include Suzy Parker, Gardner McKay, Audrey Hepburn, and Dovima. The images are reproduced to the exact scale of the engraver's prints made for Avedon by master printer Andre Gremola, and are presented uncropped, on their original mounts, with Avedon's notations on both front and back and with stamps and extensive notes on cropping and page layout from the magazine's editors. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable mylar sleeves.
