Stacpoole's trilogy follows the innocent but incestuous romance between cousins, Dicky and Emmeline Lestrange, marooned as children on a South Pacific island (Stacpoole spent a brief career as a ship's doctor, which took him to numerous exotic locations in the South Pacific), where they mature to young adulthood before being rescued afloat in a lifeboat. The 1980 film version, directed by Randal Kleiser, starred Brooke Shields and Christopher Atkins. N. B.
