In June of 1932, a small group of Confederate veterans gathered in their old capitol for the 42nd annual reunion of the United Confederate Veterans. The men were aged, and this was surmised to be their last parade. Freeman, best known for his multi-volume biographies of Robert E. Lee and George Washington (both awarded Pulitzer Prizes), published a commemorative editorial in the Richmond News Leader of Friday, June 24, the final day of the parade: "Today the city has its last review. The armies of the South will march our streets no more. It is the rearguard, engaged with death, that passes now." David Johnson, in his biography of Freeman, says that only "five hundred copies were printed and, after they were on the market for a short time, Freeman bought the remaining copies and presented them through the years as gifts to friends and associates." (p. 118). This copy (although not identified as such) is from the estate of one of Freeman's daughter, and was one of his own copies direct from the publisher for distribution to friends. N. B.
