First Slovenian translation of Anne Frank’s diary, with an evocative mid-century binding and dust jacket designed by Uroš Vagaja (1920–1971). Translated by Albert Širok and introduced by Natalia Ginzburg. Crown 8vo (195 x 125mm): 235,[5]pp. with six full-page plates from photographs. Publisher's illustrated binding, black cloth spine lettered in gold over rose-pink and black grill featuring stylized dove; dust jacket (unpriced, as issued) repeating binding design. An excellent example (binding beautifully preserved, edges and several pages with light marginal stains, neatly inscribed to front fly leaf), tightly bound and generally clean throughout. First published, in Dutch, in 1947, with numerous translations appearing in the 1950s. Vagaja was one of the most prolific and esteemed Yugoslav book designers of the post war period. Trained as an architect, he also was active as a painter, illustrator, and poster designer, most famously for the 1952 Cockta poster (for the Slovenian-Yugoslav soft drink). MoMA saluted his work in the exhibition Toward a Concrete Utopia, Architecture in Yugoslavia, 1948– 1980. N. B.
