Spine gilt a bit dulled, but tightly bound (apparently unread) and pristine throughout. Lances Down: Publisher's second-issue scarlet remainder binding, spine and front cover lettered in black; off-white illustrated dust jacket printed in black, grey, and shades of red and priced (on front flap) 10/6, with bookseller's ink stamp to front flap updating price to 5/-. During the First World War, Boleslavski, a young Uhlan lancer, fought as a cavalry lieutenant on the tsarist Russian side. He left Russia after the October Revolution of 1917 for his native Poland, where he made his first movies, then emigrated to the United States in 1922, where he directed such popular films as Rasputin and the Empress (1932), Les Misérables (1935), and Theodora Goes Wild (1936).
