Collects new and previously published poems, including "To the Pliocene Skull" and "Her Letter," as well as Harte's tribute to Dickens, "Dickens in Camp" and two of his renowned Civil War Poems, “Reveille” and “How Are You, Sanitary?”. Harte's breakthrough came was with the publication three years earlier of “The Luck of Roaring Camp,” and although his reputation today rests on the handful of stories he wrote for the Overland in the two and a half years before his triumphant return to the East in 1871, he had a strong contemporary reputation as a poet, based on his Civil War poems and on his equally successful comic and satiric poems in dialect, eight of which are also collected here.
