Later published, in 1896, under title Christian Vellacott or, A Slave of the Lamp. Merriman worked by day as an underwriter at Lloyd's, but devoted himself during off hours to writing novels, many of which were hugely popular. Besides The Slave of the Lamp, they include The Sowers (generally considered his best), In Kedar's Tents (1897), The Velvet Glove (1901), The Vultures (1902), and the Napoleonic Romance Barlasch of the Guard (1903).
