Songs Sung by the Canadian Colored Concert Co., the Paragon Male Quartette and Imperial Orchestra. Five Years' Tour of Great Britain. Three Years' Tour of the United States [title from cover: Plantation Lullabies]
Hamilton, ONT: Duncan Lith. Co., N.d. [ca 1905?]. One of many editions of this souvenir songbook. The "Canadian Colored Concert Co." is presumably a slightly later iteration of the "The Canadian Jubilee Singers," who toured the U.S. and Canada from the 1880s to the turn of the century (ref. Abbott, Out of Sight: the Rise of African American Popular Music 1889-1895). The earliest published reference we find to the group under this name is in an issue of the Cedar Falls [Iowa] Gazette for October 3, 1905, announcing an upcoming concert. Numerous other contemporary newspaper accounts suggest that the company toured the U.S. widely in this year, providing us a likely publication date for this version of the songbook. Edition not stated. 12mo, staple-bound pamphlet in chromolithographed wrappers; 54,(2)pp. Slight external wear, with a bit of age-spotting to front cover; still a tight, well-preserved copy, Very Good or better in the original color-printed wrappers. Price: $250.00" (LB). Near Fine+. Item #BB2426
