Originally published in 1853. Becher, fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and the Royal Astronomical Society, was a naval commander, hydrographer, and cartographer. Here he uses first hand accounts, with precise meteorological data, to explain the physics and mathematics of hurricanes and suggests precautionary measures to avoid them. He also details ways to ascertain the center and direction of approaching storms and illustrates with a detailed account of a hurricane encountered in the Gulf of Mexico, in 1838, as published in the Nautical Magazine, which he founded and edited.
